A Battle of Words

This post is pretty much for myself because it seems like I have to look up whether to use "lay" versus "lie" every single time {or spend 15 minutes trying to re-word the sentence to completely avoid using it...not exactly the most efficient use of my time}.  Plus, a little grammar review never hurt anyone, right?

Lay Versus Lie

  • Lay: to place or put

    • Present tense: Please lay your bag on the table.
    • Past tense: I laid the baby down in his crib.
    • Present Participle (with am/is/are): I am laying the papers on your desk.
    • Past Participle (with has/have/had): I have laid my clothes on the bed.

  • Lie: to rest or recline

    • Present tense: I'm going to lie down for a nap.
    • Past tense: I lay down for bed at 8:30 last night.
      • This one is the trickster because the past tense of lie is the same as the present tense of lay. Plus, many people {including meincorrectly use laid as the past tense for lie in it may sound right even though it is grammatically incorrect.
    • Present Participle (with am/is/are): The kids are lying on the floor while watching a movie.
    • Past Participle (with has/have/had): I had lain in bed for an hour and was still wide awake.
  • Tip: Substitute "place" for "lay" or "lie" in a sentence. If it makes sense, use "lay." If it doesn't work, use "lie."
  • Test your lay/lie knowledge with this quiz.

Set Versus Sit

  • Set: to put or place {similar to "lay"}

    • Present tense: Please set your bag on the table.
    • Past tense: I set the baby down in his crib.
    • Present Participle (with am/is/are): I am setting the papers on your desk.
    • Past Participle (with has/have/had): have set my clothes on the bed.

  • Sit: to be seated or come to a resting position

    • Present tense: You may sit wherever you'd like.
    • Past tense: I sat in the front row.
    • Present Participle (with am/is/are): They are sitting near the door.
    • Past Participle (with has/have/had): had sat in the same place for hours.

Which grammar rules are hard for you to remember?

Disclosure:  I sincerely apologize for any grammatical errors in this (or any other) blog post.  I try to carefully proofread before I publish, but I find that I am sometimes blind to glaringly large mistakes simply because I've looked at it too many times.  Please let me know if you find mistakes in my posts.  I'll be very grateful to you...after I've corrected it!  :)

Life Lately...

It's been a minute or two since I've given this little bloggety blog some quality time and attention. What can I say, but sometimes living life gets in the way of documenting life.  Here's a little update on what we have been/are up to...

One: Megan's 30th Birthday Celebration

On Saturday, August 9th, we went out to celebrate my fabulous friend Megan's 30th birthday! Good times...

Uptown Dallas

Two: Long Weekend in Nashville

I was terrible about taking photos while we were in Nashville last weekend. Based on the photos we do have, it appears all we did was eat and drink while we were there. Oh wait...that pretty much is what we did!

Nashville is my new favorite city! So.Much.FUN! There's so much to do...and everywhere you turn there is GOOD music! Our favorite bar on Broadway was Tootsie's...we may have visited it more than once. We had some A-MAZing food, but if I had to narrow down our favorites, I'd go with The Southern and Urban Grub. We had such a great time in Nashville and will definitely be going back...soon! Perhaps I'll remember to take more pics then! :)

Three: My Sweet Nephew

Of course I've got to include sweet Baby Nais in a "Life Lately..." update. Although I don't get to see the lil' guy nearly as much as I'd like, his mommy and daddy are very good about sending pics and FaceTiming with Aunt LeeLee.  He's growing so fast...and definitely on the move {crawling so much that he needs knee pads to protect those chubby little knees from the hardwood floors}.

Handsome Baby Nais, 8 months old

There are numerous pics where Nais looks a lot like his daddy, but the pic above took me back about 28ish years to when my baby brother was about this size. I decided to go through some old photos, and this is what I came up with...

Landon {circa 1986} on the left; Nais on the right
Tell me they're not related...Like Father, Like Son

Love this perfect lil' family soooo much...

Four: Miss Preslee Jo's 3rd Birthday

Today is Miss Preslee Jo's 3rd birthday! She just might the girliest girl I know...and I adore it! I mean, seriously, look at her having a tea party with her babies! Happy Birthday Sweet Girl!

Five: Christine's Baby Shower

This weekend we'll celebrate the upcoming arrival of Christine's baby girl at her baby shower. How cute is this momma-to-be?

Have a fabulous weekend!

Today I'm linking up with "Oh, Hey Friday!" {hosted by The Farmer's Wife and September FARM} and "High Five for Friday" {hosted by Lauren Elizabeth}. Thanks, ladies, for hosting!

Pillow Talk

"Nine. She's got nine fancy pillows on our bed."

That's the opening AND closing line of this song that I'm really loving right now.

When Ryan sent it to me a few weeks ago as the "Song of the Day," I counted the fancy pillows on our bed and had a near meltdown when I realized we were one short!

Enter Dinham Designs, my friend Meggan's cute lil' Etsy shop with fabulous throw pills that are high quality and affordable!

High Five for Friday!

Happy Friday! Just a short and sweet little post to share five current events in my world!

One: Southwest Kansas Pro-Am

The husband is back in Kansas for the Pro-Am golf tournament. I'm excited for him that he gets to go see friends/family while "working"...but I'm a little sad that I'm not there too. Here's to hoping he plays some great golf!

Two: And while Ryan's in Kansas...

This little guy {and his parents} is {are} his host{s}:

Nais with Uncle Ryan...2 pretty special guys in my world!

I might be a little jealous of both of them for getting to spend time with each other!

Three: Megan's 30th Birthday Celebration

Her actually birthday was a couple of weeks ago, but we're finally celebrating the big 3-0 this weekend! I'm so excited to officially welcome Megan to the 30 Club!

Four: Countdown to Mini-Vacation

Next week at this time we'll be in Nashville with Chris and Linds for a nice little little long weekend getaway. Ryan and I have never been Nashville, so we can't wait to check it out! Advice/recommendations welcome...I'd love to hear from you!

Five: Blog Love

  • That Time My Diaries Were Published by Mandi at Girl in Beta. First of all, Mandi is a fabulously entertaining writer. I genuinely love all of her posts. This specific post tells the story of how her diaries from high school ended up in a published book {a published book that has a blurb from Alanis Morissette!}. Check it out...and then go buy the book!
  • {Monthly Faves} July Loves: this is a monthly link-up hosted by Mia and Kelli. It's so fun to see what other bloggers are currently loving. A recommendation/review from someone who actually uses a product is the best way to learn about new "stuff" that I truly NEED in my life!

Have a fabulous weekend!

The Beyoncélogues

Queen Bey and Jay Z are all over the news...
  • Are they or aren't they getting a divorce?
  • The record-breaking success of their "On the Run" tour.
  • The elevator drama with Solange is STILL making headlines.
There's another story circulating {well, it was circulating back in June...I'm a little late to the party on this one} that only involves Beyoncé's lyrics.

Nina Millin, Beyonce

After a failed attempt to sing a Queen Bey song during karaoke, Nina Millin decided to perform Beyoncé in a way that she dramatic monologue form. Thus, The Beyoncélogues were born.

Pretty fabulous, huh?

If you were half as entertained as I was with Millin's performance, you're definitely going to want to check out her versions of:

Too Cute for Words

In my totally unbiased opinion, they just don't come any cuter than this...

Baby Anderson Bean books, Baby True Religion jeans
Baby Nais ready for the rodeo!

There just aren't words for this level of cuteness!

Baby Nais was stylin' in his tiny Anderson Bean boots and True Religion jeans. In the words of his dad, "The ladies don't even know what's about to hit 'em!"  He definitely has this aunt wrapped around his finger! Love that lil midget so much!

My phone/computer/every-digital-device-I-own tells me it is August...but my head just can't comprehend it. It's in the eighth month of the year? did this happen? Where did time go?

One: Nieces and Nephew

I travelled to Oklahoma last weekend to stay with our nieces so Lacey {Ryan's sister} could be with Clay {brother-in-law} in the hospital. No worries...Clay is home now and doing well. The girls and I had lots of fun...and I learned all about Princess Sophia and Tinkerbelle.

Me with Jalyn {4} and Hailey {6}
I knew my mom was coming to meet me while I was there, but I was totally surprised when Kelli and Baby Nais walked in.  Best.Surprise.Ever.

Me with Nais {8-months, to the day}

Two: Tiff's Treats

On Tuesday, my coworker found out that he passed Level 1 of the CFA exam. This is a BIG.DEAL because the CFA exam is ridiculously difficult. {In 2013, the average candidate studied 307 hours and only 43% passed...tell me that's not a sign that the test might be kinda hard!} Anyway...back to the subject at hand...I got him a dozen cookies from Tiff's Treats as a congratulatory gift. This may have been somewhat of a selfish gift because I knew he would share...he's just a nice guy like that.

cookie delivery, gift instead of flowers

Tiff's Treats are only the #BestCookiesOnThePlanet. Seriously. Well, aside from my grandma's. Anyway, next time you're thinking of sending flowers to someone in the Austin, Dallas or Houston areas, do yourself a favor and just send Tiff's Treats. The A-MAZing cookies are a million times cheaper than flowers and the recipient will thank you! Unless he/she is on a strict diet...nah, they'll still thank you!

Three: Photoshop

Courtney {from Sweet Home Alabamian} posted about Photoshop wonders and linked to this article. I knew Photoshop could do some "work," but I guess I didn't realize just how much "work" it could total transformation! Don't get me wrong, Faith Hill is naturally beautiful...but look how much "work" they did around her eyes for this cover photo {not to mention the significant shrinkage of her arm!}

Faith Hill

Now that I know what Photoshop is truly capable of, I am in the market for a professional Photoshopper {yes, I tend to make up my own words when necessary} to transform all photos of of charge, of course.

No, no, no...just kidding! The point of this is to remind us all not to compare ourselves to magazine images because that's not reality.

Blah, blah, blah...that's all good and well...but still hit me up if you know of anyone who's willing to "enhance" all of my photos until I look as good as Faith Hill {magazine cover version...duh!}.

Four: B&BW Candles

My mind is still blown that it is August. On a positive note, Bath & Body Works has put their summer scented candles on sale. My favorites are Lilac Blossom and Wild Poppies.

Five: Blog Love

  • First Anniversary {Traditional} Gifts by Katie Elizabeth. She shares a few fabulous ideas for the traditional paper gift for the first wedding anniversary. We're planning to take a trip for our first anniversary {if only we could decide where to go}, and I love the shadowbox idea that she shows to go with "tickets" as the paper gift.
  • Etiquette + Blogland = Blog-tiquette by Amanda at As the Wine Cork Turns. Amanda's guide to all the "don'ts" of blogging {complete with eeeeek factor to signify level of annoyance} is HA-LAR-ious.

Happy Friday!
