Leslie Loves...{1.18}

Hi Friends! Just two must-haves in today's edition of "Leslie Loves..." because I'm running a little short on time. They are pretty fabulous though, and I'm sure you'll find that you NEED both products. Soooo...let's get to it!

Remington Hot Rollers

Remington Hot Rollers, Hot Rollers,
Remington T|Studio Silk Ceramic
Heated Clip Setter

I've owned a lot of hot rollers in my life, and these are the very best I've found. There are 20 rollers in the set: 12 large {1¼"} and 8 medium {1"}. They heat up really fast, and the curls are set in just five minutes {for soft curls}. The longer you leave the rollers in your hair, the tighter the curl. In the left pic below {with Landon}, I left the rollers in longer {probably 15-20 minutes}. And in the right pic {with Kelli}, I probably left them in for 5-7 minutes. I usually just leave them in while I'm doing my makeup, and my curls last all day...and usually the next day too! I've had two friends use my set of rollers, and they both went out and bought their own set because they loved the resulting curls so much. I'm telling you, Remington hot rollers = pretty hair!

Conair Garment Steamer

I don't know how I survived the first 31 years of my life without a steamer. Oh wait, I guess now would probably be a good time to thank my mom for ironing every piece of clothing I owned while I lived at home {Thanks, Vic!}. Unfortunately, her love for ironing was not passed down to her daughter. I was forced to rely on the dry cleaner to press my wardrobe when I grew up moved away from home. So I guess that's my story of survival pre-steamer...anyway, just believe me that life is lots easier WITH a steamer {and a husband that is really good at using it!}.

I'd venture to say this is probably our most-used wedding gift. The Conair garment steamer is a middle-of-the-line steamer as far as cost goes...but I can't imagine why you'd buy one that is more expensive because the Conair garment steamer is pretty much perfect! I do have a few pointers to go along with this recommendation:
  • Use distilled water in the steamer to avoid having spots on your clothing if you accidentally get the steam a little too close for a little too long. If you do end up with a big wet blob, I promise it dries without a trace as long as you're using distilled water.
  • Don't attempt to steam clothes while you're wearing them.  Not that I've tried this before, but I've heard that steam leaves burn marks on skin! Ouch!
  • The Conair garment steamer is available at Bed Bath & Beyond, but it's currently cheaper at Amazon, which is where all the links above will take you!
-------------------------------------------------

As always, I'd love to know what you think of my "loves"...have you tried any? Do you have any recommendations for me? I love to hear from you.

25 Years Ago: A Tribute to Lane Frost

Today marks 25 years since Lane Frost died in a bull riding accident during Cheyenne Frontier Days, {the Daddy of 'Em All}. Last fall, Aaron Watson wrote and released "July in Cheyenne," a tribute to the legendary cowboy...

8 Seconds is truly one of my favorite movies...and no matter how many times I've seen it, I'll still cry EVERY.SINGLE.TIME. It's just such a great story of a true icon in the rodeo world.

Five on Friday: Happy Birthday Little Bro!

An open letter to my brother on his birthday...

Happy 29th Birthday, Landon!

We've been through a lot together over the past 29 years, and I'm incredibly grateful for the close relationship we share. As I was going through these old photos, I found at least a million I wanted to post...but in sticking with the "Five on Friday" theme, I'm sharing only five of my favorite times spent with you throughout the past 29 years.

One: July 25, 1985

The day I became a big sister...which may also be the day I started acting like your mom.

Two: Graduation Weekend {for both of us}

That one weekend when I graduated from KU and you graduated from high school.

Three: Tattoos

That one time our parents nearly killed us because we got brother/sister tattoos {for your 21st birthday}.

Four: Your engagement

That one time I got off a plane after traveling for work and drove five hours to be there when you asked Kelli to marry you! #totallyworthit

Five: November 26, 2013

The day Nais was born. I could see it in your eyes and hear it in your voice...you were {and are} so proud to be a daddy! You have every reason to be proud of your perfect little family.

Here's to hoping the last year of your twenties will be the best one yet!

Happy Birthday!

I love you!

Wedding Wednesday: The Proposal

winter proposal with Christmas lights, Ryan Martin and Leslie Lukens, engagement

The Proposal {Leslie's Version}:

December 22, 2012.  Ryan had convinced me that he'd volunteered us to pose for some photos to help his friend who was trying to build his photography portfolio. During the "photo shoot," I turned around to find Ryan down on one knee holding a very sparkly diamond and started crying before he even said a word. There are two statements I remember him saying: 1) "I knew from the moment I first met you in Dallas," and 2) "I'd just like to ask you Question #1000, 'Will you marry me?'" Turns out his friend wasn't really working on his portfolio, but I L.O.V.E. that we have the proposal captured in photos. He pulled off a total surprise!

The Proposal {Ryan's Version}:

I knew I had the right diamond when we went to the dealer to look at rings and she dropped this diamond as the jeweler handed it to her.  The great thing was that she thought it was one that someone else had already bought.  She had no clue that it was mine.  When it came to popping the question, Leslie and I had two different ideas of the perfect proposal.  Hers was public and mine was private.  I knew we needed pictures to tell the story, so I had a friend stage the whole thing.  Leslie thought we were posing for my friend's photography portfolio.  It worked out perfect!  Toward the end of the session I got down on one knee and turned her around to see me holding the ring.  Once she gained her composure, she finally said "Yes!"

Recently...

A little look back at what we've recently been up to...

One: Randy Rogers and Wade Bowen
Way back last week, we {Darcy, Ryan and I} went to see Randy Rogers and Wade Bowen play an acoustic show at the House of Blues. I had forgotten how good these guys are. Both of them sound just as good live {without a band} as they do on a recorded track. It was a great show. They had the stage set up like a cozy little living room...and even had Pure Country {VHS version!} playing on the TV. Excuse the grainy/blurry pics...had to use my iPhone {in the dark, from the balcony} because oops! I left my camera at home on the charger.

Two: Sleepover!
Little Midget Max {my godson} stayed with us on Saturday night.
Lil Midget Max ruling the roost!
We worked hard on vocabulary words. He's really doing well with "Jayhawk!" We only tried "Rock Chalk" a couple of times...and when the result sounded a lot like a very bad word {as in the one that rhymes with duck}, we opted to delay practicing that phrase until the next sleepover!

Three: Yardwork
After we had checked out at Home Depot last weekend, we walked by some pretty little blooming flowers that I decided we just HAD.TO.HAVE for the empty space on our back patio that was just filled with dirt {ugly!}. Back through the checkout line we go {the husband even thought to get me some gardening gloves...pure brilliance on his part or else he probably would have had to do it all himself!}. The end result? Pretty flowers and a nice little sunburn....

Four: Shopping!
I've spent a significant amount of time {online} shopping...sorting through all the fabulous fall stuff included in the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale. Check out yesterday's post {here} to see a list of my favorite items included in the sale!

Five: Blog Love
  • Seven Answers After Five Years by Amber at Mr. Thomas and Me. Amber opens up about her dad's battle with Alzheimer's. This post really impacted me, as my granddad is experiencing the early stages of dementia.

There are two new Friday link-ups that I'm participating in today: "Oh, Hey Friday!" {hosted by The Farmer's Wife and September Farm} and "Friday Favorites" {hosted by All the Joys}. Thanks, ladies, for hosting!

Leslie Loves...{1.17}

This "Leslie Loves..." post is dedicated to my favorite items included in the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale, which officially begins tomorrow {Friday, July 18} and runs through Sunday, August 3. However, if you're a Nordstrom cardholder, you have full access to the sale now {just log in to your account on Nordstrom.com to see the anniversary sale prices}!

In the spirit of full disclosure, this post contains affiliate links {i.e. if you click a link and buy the product, I may receive a small commission}. However, I promise you that I either 1) already own {and love!}, 2) have ordered and am patiently waiting on the arrival of , or 3) have made the husband aware of my need for {hey, I've got a birthday coming up...and having a "wish list" is never a bad idea!} each of the products I've listed below. These are bona fide "loves"...just sayin'. End rant.

The Nordstrom Anniversary Sale is fabulous because it is NEW {Fall} STUFF that's on sale...not your typical sale trying to clear out last season's leftovers. It's kind of like a preview of what's hot for fall, and then the prices will go up on August 4. To save you some time and energy, I've gone through everything that is included in the sale {several times} and picked out some great deals. Some for work, some for play...a little bit of everything! Without further delay...my top 13 "loves" of the 2014 Nordstrom Anniversary Sale:

Just a little heads-up...there's a LIMITED SUPPLY of a few of my "loves" {the Smashbox brush set, the Tahari coat, the Ellen Tracy dress}, so snag these deals as soon as you can! Don't forget that shipping is free {for returns too}, so if you're having a hard time deciding if you really need something, go ahead and order it while it's on sale and determine its essentiality factor after it arrives. If you decide you don't need it, send it back...no cost to you!

I hope this little list makes sifting through the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale a little easier for you! I can't wait to hear what you bought...so don't forget to report back with your purchases! Happy shopping!

Dirt

Song lyrics tend to be my preferred method for relating to the world. I've said it before and I'll say it again, I truly believe there's a song lyric that describes any and every situation you could ever find yourself in. I heard Florida Georgia Line's new song, Dirt, the other day on my way to work, and all I could think of was "home"....good 'ole Medicine Lodge, Kansas, red dirt and all.

"It's that elm shade, red rust clay you grew up on
That plowed up ground that your dad damned his luck on
That post-game party field you circled up on
And when it rains you get stuck on"

As with all the previous Florida Georgia Line songs, I'm sure this one will be played 24/7 on the radio until I get tired of it, but for now I'm love love loving it!

#MillerDonovanWedding

While the husband was slaving away at work over the 4th of July holiday weekend, my mom and I ventured out to Steamboat Springs, Colorado to celebrate the nuptials of Lindsay Donovan and Brandon Miller.

Colorado Wedding, Midnight Ranch
Mr. & Mrs. Miller

Lindsay is a lifelong friend of mine. Our families are close. We grew up together. We go WAY.BACK! I'm so glad I was able to be there for her big day...I wouldn't have missed it for the world.

The wedding and reception were held at Midnight Ranch, a beautiful venue about 30 miles north of Steamboat Springs.
