Just a little look into what I have been/am currently up to...

Loving: that today is my last day of work this week!

Reading: instructions to put together Huston's toys. Actually, that's a lie. I WISH I was reading the instructions...but they don't use words, only pictures. Pictures that I have a very difficult time interpreting. Just give me some words to read, and I'd have this stuff built already!

Listening to: "Riser," by Dierks Bentley {listen & watch the video here}...I cannot get enough of this song! I've been loving it for awhile now, but I just watched the video for the first time, and...TEARS.

Watching: absolutely nothing...there is no time for TV! Our DVR is full of shows I need to catch up on, but I just haven't found the time. This sounds like a good project for January! #CouchPotatoComingSoon

Anticipating: the any-day-now arrival of my newest nephew! #BabyLukens2

Working on: packing for our trip to Kansas for Christmas. It's really too bad that I'm the Worst.Packer.On.The.Planet!

Enjoying: all of the Christmas/holiday cards we've received! Definitely one of my favorite things about the holiday season!

Smelling: the fabulous scent of my newest candle, Mahogany Balsam, from Bath & Body Works. Perfect for the season!

Hoping: that Baby Huston will travel well {as well as can be expected of a four-month old} on our journey to Kansas to celebrate Christmas with Ryan's family.

Thanking: my husband for being such an amazing dad to our baby boy.  Ryan has been on a hunting trip the past couple of days, and being home by myself with our little midget reminded me just how much he does for Huston...and for me! #GratefulWife

Wishing: everyone a very MERRY CHRISTMAS!

Three Month Photos

I realize this sweet baby boy is now four months old, but I had to keep his three-month pics under wraps until our Christmas cards had been signed, sealed & delivered. We had his three-month photos taken when we were in Kansas for Thanksgiving...and I want to send a HUGE thanks to Lacey {LuLu's Pictures} for capturing some fabulous images! Here are a few of my favorites...

We also had her snap a few family pics too {which you may have already seen on our Christmas card}...

Once again...thank you, thank you, thank you to LuLu's Pictures for squeezing us into your schedule and capturing these photos/memories that we'll treasure forever!

Four Months

Our sweet baby boy is four months old...how can that be?!!? He's grown and changed so much this month...more so than in previous months.  He's becoming more and more active, and he's so much fun to play with and talk to. He's the center of our world...

A few notes from Huston's fourth month of life...
  • We’ll get the “official” stats at his four-month well visit on Monday {ugh…more shots!}, but based on our attempts to weigh and measure at home, he’s about 14 pounds and 24 inches long.  He’s really started to fill out over the last month, but he’s still on the small side for his age.  Size 1 diapers are still fitting well, although his round little belly may be busting out of them before too long.  As for clothes, size 3-6 months fits him almost perfectly in most brands…we’ve found that some pants in this size are a little on the short side for our long-legged little man.  "Official Stats" update after his four-month well visit: 13 pounds, 13 ounces {16th percentile} and 25 inches long {40th percentile}.
  • Baby boy is still eating like a hoss.  Most of his bottles contain about 1-2 ounces of supplementing formula mixed with 3-4 ounces of breast milk.  In a typical day, he’ll take six bottles in addition to one nursing session {usually right when I get home from work}.  He usually eats about five ounces at a time except for his nighttime bottles, which vary in size depending on how well he nursed.  With all that said, our little guy is currently taking between 28-31 ounces from the bottle in addition to anywhere from 20-50 minutes nursing per day.  I’ve been able to build up a little bit of a stash of frozen breast milk since we’ve been supplementing with formula, and I feel like my milk supply has picked up a bit in the last week, so we may try to back off the supplementing formula in this next month…we’ll just see how it goes.
  • Sleeping. We’re still pretty consistent on the sleep schedule...putting him down around 9:30 pm and he’ll wake for a bottle around 5:30 am and then go back to sleep until about 9:00 am.  His tiny little hands get so cold in the night, so we’re still putting the newborn mittens on him while he sleeps if his pajamas don’t have the fold-over sleeves to keep his little fingers warm.  He still doesn’t have much of an interest in napping during the day…little “cat naps” {15-20 minutes} here and there, but we have learned that he’ll sleep much longer during the day if someone lies down with him in a big bed.
  • Talk, talk, talk…our little guy is a jabbering machine! His little voice is so sweet and entertaining…I could listen to him 24/7. He loves loves loves to carry on conversations and is very responsive when someone talks to him.  He’s giggled at us a few times this past month, but we’ve yet to hear a big belly laugh.
  • Roly Poly. Although he’d done it a couple of times in the past, he’s just within the last week figured out how to consistently roll from his back to his tummy…and he does it ALL.THE.TIME.  The only problem is that he can’t quite figure out how to get back to his back…and he doesn’t necessarily LOVE tummy time...so he’s kind of like a tipped-over turtle.  Thus, we spend a lot of time turning him back over only to get a HUGE grin from him and then see him throw his legs out and roll back to his front again.  This is usually pretty cute…except when he repeatedly does it in the middle of the night.
  • Ryan and I had our first date night, and the little man stayed home with Darcy.
  • He experienced his first flight this past month…and it was a bit of a disaster.  Let’s just say that Huston and Momma won’t be flying without Daddy again for awhile.  I think the biggest problem was that we were on a small {American Eagle} plane and it was a late {9:50 pm} flight, so he was tired, hot and scared of all the people so closely surrounding him.  We got on the plane and had to sit there for 45 minutes while we waited on the maintenance crew to fix something…meanwhile, my baby who has never really cried for longer than a few minutes at a time was SCREAMING the entire time.  He was so upset, and that upset me…so then I was crying. It was just an all-around disaster.  MOST of the people on the plane were kind and understanding, but there were a few who were {like I was just a few years ago} totally annoyed with the crying baby.  The flight attendant finally told me there was a row in the back of the plane that was totally empty, so we moved back there to have more room.  Once we finally took off, he calmed down and slept the entire flight. It was just a rough start…and not an experience I want to re-live ever again.
A photo Daddy snapped before we went through security.
Sprawled out in open airplane seat...finally content! #NotAFanOfFlying
  • Once we finally made it to Kansas, we were able to celebrate cousin Nais’ 2nd birthday and see lots of family and friends…
Huston with Great-Grandma Janet, Granddad Brock & Grandma Jo
Huston with Abbey & Wes Campbell
My good friend {and college roommate} Kelly Jean Craig & her son, Cooper
Huston with Grandpa Ted, Great-Grandma Lois & Grammy
Huston with his buddy, Brendon
  • Huston met his Aunt Kiley and cousin Brexton for the first time {failed to get a pic with either of them!} and also his Aunt Lacey, Uncle Clay and cousins Hailey & Jalyn...
  • We celebrated Huston’s first Thanksgiving with my parents in Medicine Lodge…

  • On the pacifier front…a HUGE thank you to Kortney for suggesting we try the WubbaNub! We’ve had the giraffe WubbaNub since he was born, but he didn’t show much interest in it at first, so we put it away and kind of forgot about it.  Anyway, we pulled it out this past month, and he absolutely LOVES it.  Given that it’s attached to the little stuffed animal, he’s got so much more to grasp on and can actually get the paci in his mouth my himself {some of the time}…however, I think he likes to chew on the poor giraffe’s ears and legs more than he likes the actual paci.
  • He helped decorate the Christmas tree…

  • And visited Santa...

  • And checked out Santa's Village...

    • The newest thing he loves is sitting with us at the table while we eat dinner…

      Dear Huston,

Wow! Your little personality has just EXPLODED this month. You will talk our ears off, especially in the morning…and we absolutely cherish every minute of those sweet conversations with you. Keep talkin’, little buddy, we will ALWAYS be here to listen to you, no matter what you have to say.  The way you’ve taken interest in and started playing with some of your toys {especially the ones that make the crinkle noise} amazes us. It’s like you just figured it out overnight, and now you’ve even learned that you can reach out and pick them up yourself rather than waiting for us to hand it to you.  It’s so fun to watch you learn and grow, baby boy. Each and every day you show us something new and exciting.

Your puppysister, Lily, might be getting a little jealous of all the attention you’re getting from your daddy and me.  She’s been pretty needy these last couple of weeks, and she wants to be close to us all the time…but especially when you’re in our arms.  A couple of times I’ve found her in your room {rather than our bed} in the middle of the night though, so I know she secretly loves you and is closely watching over and protecting you.  Before long {when you start eating solid foods}, the two of you are going to be best friends!

The unique moments we’re experiencing right now and will be experiencing in the months to come are truly extra special.  I’ve come to realize that every “first” for you is a “first” for us too.  We are learning and growing right alongside you, and it’s the best trip we’ve ever been on.  You are the best thing that’s ever happened to us, and we thank God every single day for allowing us to be your parents.  Our hearts are so full they could burst! We love you so much more than you could ever know.

      Love you always,

      Here Comes Santa Claus

Last weekend we ventured out for a visit with Santa Claus, and this momma was pleasantly surprised with the results...

We didn't get any smiles, but there weren't any tears...so I'm calling it a win!

      Ho Ho Ho!

      Three Months

Three months. A quarter of a year. It's truly been an incredible ride since Baby Huston came into the world. Our little guy grows and changes every.single.day. His little personality is really starting to come out, and pretty much everything he does melts this momma's heart.

A few notes from Huston's third month of life...
      • We didn't have an appointment with the pediatrician this month, so we don't have an updated height and weight. He's still wearing size 1 diapers, but he's definitely filling out {and outgrowing!} his size 0-3-month clothes and has started transitioning into 3-6 month-sized clothes. Just in the past few days, his little legs have outgrown his size 3-month pants {high-waters!}, so we have proof that he's growing!
      • Update on the hematomas {big bruises/pools of blood/big 'ole bumps caused from using the vacuum during birth} on his head: they're nothing to worry about! {Thank you, God...thank you, thank you, thank you!} We met with the specialist, and he confirmed that Huston's body will eventually absorb the calcified bumps and that they are no danger to his health and/or development. It may take months or even years for the bumps to completely disappear, but it's such a huge relief to know they're not a cause for concern.
      • Eating. Not a lot has changed on the food front this month. We still nurse 1-2 times per day {with assistance from the nipple shield}. The remainder of the time I'm pumping like a dairy cow {it's the most-used emoji on my phone these days}, so he can eat from a bottle. Most of his bottles are five ounces, but he's been known to take up to seven ounces per feeding. He's currently taking between 24-28 ounces from a bottle per day, depending how well he nurses. We are supplementing with formula a majority of the time, but for some reason I have this goal of giving him 100% breastmilk at least one day per week. I have no idea why or how I even came up with that plan, but it has stuck throughout the month.
      • Sweet baby boy sleeps like a champ! We typically put him down between 9:00-10:00 pm, and he sleeps until 5:30-6:00 am. He wakes up to get a clean diaper and have a little breakfast bottle and then goes back down until 9:00 or 10:00 am. Most of the month he was sleeping in the pack-n-play in our room, but just a couple of days ago we moved him into his crib in his room. He mastered that transition like a pro...meanwhile, Momma is missing him being in our room! Despite being able to see him clearly on the monitor screen, I still got up four times the first night he was in his crib just to make sure he was still breathing!
First night sleeping in his big crib
      • He has found his voice, and he's especially talkative in the mornings! He must get his happy morning attitude from his daddy...
      • Our little guy absolutely LOVES when we sing to him. I've found a channel on YouTube to refresh my memory on nursery rhymes. I think "The Wheels on the Bus" is his current favorite. I'm not gonna lie...I LOVE when his daddy sings to him because I never know what he's going to come up with for the next lyric!
      • Grammy came to visit for a few days.
      • We visited the pumpkin patch at the Dallas Arboretum, and our little guy loved every minute of being outside in the fresh air.
He took the pumpkin patch very seriously!
      • He's oh-so-close to being able to put the pacifier back in his mouth when it falls out. When he masters that, it's gonna be a life-changer for Mom and Dad {especially during the night!}.
      • Our little midget spent some quality time with his midget girlfriend, Olivia.

      • Huston was a pilot for his very first Halloween...and later that evening he wore his jack-o-lantern jammies to help pass out candy to the trick-or-treaters!

      The Ehmans' Halloween Party
      • I had to go back to work last week, and it's been much harder on me than I ever expected. I took full advantage of my last few days at home with our sweet baby boy and squeezed in as much cuddle time as possible.

      • His favorite thing to do is play on his piano activity mat. He's content to bat around the toys and kick the piano keys for 30-45 minutes at a time. He especially loves it if we get down there with him...he'll "coo" and "ahh" until the end of time {or until he gets hungry} if someone is playing with him.

      • Last month he rolled over from his front to his back...but he hasn't done it again since then. This month he rolled from his back to his front twice...but both times he was pretty mad and kind of flailing around while crying, so I'm not sure the roll-overs were intentional!

      Dear Huston,

Your little personality really started coming to life this month, and somehow you managed to wrap your daddy and me even more tightly around your tiny little finger. You've brought so much joy and love into our lives...it's truly immeasurable! Although you've been showing us your bright little smile for awhile now, it still turns us to mush when you flash that big grin!

You're such a happy baby, and you love to be around people. You're totally content just watching all the action that is going on around you. You don't seem to mind when others want to hold you, but you like to be able to see or hear your daddy or me for a sense of security. Everyone comments how much you look like your daddy, and it's so true. I think it's your bright blue eyes and that ornery little smirk you have that make you your daddy's little mini-me.

Going back to work just might be the hardest thing I've ever done. It's a good thing you're still sleeping when I leave in the mornings...otherwise I might not ever get out the door! I know you're happy and content at home with Maria, but I miss you something fierce while I'm away. The excitement in your eyes and that perfect smile on your face when you see me when I get home eliminates everything negative in the world. It's like you are the solution to all problems...you are the light of our lives!

We love you, son! Thank you for giving us a whole new meaning to life. Your sweet innocence makes us want to be better people...the best role models we can possibly be for you. You are absolutely the best thing that ever happened to us...our pride and joy!

      Love you times infinity,
