One Month

One month. The fastest 31 days of my life! I can't believe our sweet baby boy is already one month old.

A few notes from the first month...
  • He's still pretty tiny at 7 pounds, 12 ounces {6%} and 20.9 inches long {28%}, but Dr. Diana says he's growing like a champ.  Most of his newborn outfits still fit, but he's starting to fill out 0-3 month-sized clothes.
  • Breastfeeding has been a little hard for us. The lactation consultants told us he has a high palette, so we've been using nipple shields to get a proper latch. We supplemented with a few ounces of formula per day during his first week to help his bilirubin levels and avoid jaundice, but he's had 100% breastmilk since Day 7. I try to actually nurse at least a couple of times per day, but he's a very slow nurser {as in an hour +++}. He eats from a bottle a lot faster, so I'm pumping all.the.time to make sure he has enough to eat. As of today, he's taking between three and four ounces at a time, and he eats at least every three hours during the day and usually goes four to five hours at night between feedings.
  • He's got a blocked tear duct in his right eye. It doesn't seem to bother him at all, but his little watery, mattery eye almost breaks this momma's heart. At first we were just treating it by massaging around his eye and the bridge of his nose, and it really seemed to clear up...but then it got worse so we're now applying an antibiotic ointment to clear it up.  Dr. Diana told us this could be a recurring issue throughout his first year.
  • He's still fascinated with his daddy's voice and is content to sit and listen to Ryan read books. He'll follow Ryan's finger to look at the pictures on the pages.
  • He sleeps really well at night {in his Rock-n-Play}, which we're incredibly grateful for...but he does NOT want to be put down to nap during the day! He's a snuggle bug and wants to be held close throughout the day. The minute we put him down during daylight hours, his bright blue eyes pop open and he fusses until we pick him up. I've read from multiple sources that babies can't be spoiled during the first six months of life, and we're just praying this is true!

Going home from the hospital.

We had lots of help from Grammy and Grandma Jo! #ThankYou

Headed to his first church service. #11DaysOld

Cutting Momma's shower a little short!

Bath time is our favorite time!

Snuggle Bug

Although he hates the process of being swaddled,
it calms him down and allows for 4-hour sleep sessions at night.

Dear Huston,

Wow...I don't even know where to begin to describe all the joy and happiness you've brought into our lives during the past month. You're truly our pride and joy...our very best accomplishment by far! We love you more than life itself...and just one month into this parenting journey, we can't even fathom what life would be like without you. We're so in love with you, and we thank God every single day that He blessed us to be your parents.

You had a bit of a rough entry into this world, but that only allowed you to show us just how tough and strong you are. You even surprised the doctors and nurses with your strength and ability to fight off jaundice despite the big bumps and bruises on your head {caused by the vacuum that didn't even work!}. Although you're still pretty tiny, you're growing like a champ {and eating like a hoss!}. Your little personality shines through a little more each day, and you continue to wrap us tighter and tighter around your tiny finger. It's pretty clear that you're going to be a go-getter. Everyone comments on how alert and aware of your surroundings you are at such a young age. You've been holding your head up since the day you were born...always gotta know what's going on around you.

Thank you, sweet boy, for making me a momma! It's truly the best thing that's ever happened to me. You've brought out emotions I've never felt before, and I wouldn't trade one single moment of the past month for anything in the world! I love you, Son!

You have my heart forever,
