Eight Months

We've got a BUSY 8-month old baby boy on our hands! This month has brought about so much development and change in our sweet boy. The biggest change: we now have a mobile babe! There's no turning your back for even a few seconds with this quick lil' midget!

It seems like it's getting harder and harder each month to capture these pics....

I'd planned to use the blocks for his first year because I wanted the monthly photos to be consistent, but we may have to ditch the blocks going forward because it's becoming nearly impossible to capture an image of him actually looking at the camera while the blocks simultaneously say the correct month! Ha. Like I said, he's a busy little man and when he sees those blocks it becomes his mission to play with them/knock them over. Here are a few outtakes...

AND...I've gotta give major points to H's incredibly thoughtful daddy who remembered to take his 8-month pic this morning while I was out of town for work. The images above are my attempt to take a few more pics this afternoon when I got home {sans jammies and the "I just woke up" look}...but Daddy's pic might be the best option for this month.

A few notes from Huston's eighth month of life...
  • Our unofficial home estimates indicate he weighs about 16.5 pounds and is approximately 28.5 inches long. He basically weighed himself this month...
  • His clothes range anywhere from 6-12 months. He's closer to the 6-month size for shorts and onesies...but anything that needs to cover the full length of his legs {pants, sleepers} requires 9-12 months. Size 3 diapers fit well and still have some room for him to grow.
  • He prefers real {pureéd} food over his bottles for sure. However, since the pediatrician told us that he needs a minimum of 24-ounces of milk until he's a year old, we force him to take his bottles around meal times and treat the "real food" more like snacks. He's taking five 5-ounce bottles per days {5:30 am; 9:00 am; 12:30 pm; 4:00 pm; 7:00 pm}. This past month, most of his bottles have been 1/3 formula and 2/3 breast milk in an effort to transition him to formula because my milk supply continues to slowly decline {currently producing 18-22 ounces per day}.  As much as I'd love to quit, I've got "mom guilt" that keeps me attached to that breast pump because I know he prefers breast milk over formula.   He eats a veggie and a fruit "snack" mid-morning and mid-afternoon every day {usually about 6 ounces each sitting}. We usually offer him some pureéd food in the evening as well, but he only shows interest about half the time.  Although it took some getting used to, he does love to munch on some {peach} yogurt melts while we're eating dinner.
  • New foods we introduced this month: peas, broccoli, blueberries, mango, cantaloupe, kiwi and strawberry/apple puffs.
  • Bath time. Early in the month, we transitioned from using the baby bathtub to just sitting on a non-slip mat. He was pretty good with it in the beginning and liked to play with his bath toys. Then one night he reached a little too far for the rubber ducky and got a face full of water. He's been a little apprehensive of the big 'ole bathtub since then and keeps an extremely tight grip on Momma's or Daddy's arm the entire time we're bathing him. We pretty much do whatever it takes to make him feel comfortable because the last thing we want is for him to be afraid of taking a bath.
  • We've got a pretty great nighttime routine down. After his bath {and after literally wrestling the little wiggle worm to get his diaper on}, we let him play with just his diaper on for a little bit. He LOVES being a {nearly} naked baby...and it gives us a few minutes before we begin the battle of dressing him in his jammies. {Seriously...how long does this stage last where it's nearly impossible to dress a wiggly/roly-poly baby?!!?} Once he's dressed in his jammies we read books until he starts to rub his eyes. The first eye rub indicates it's time for a bottle and rocking...RIGHT.NOW {usually around 6:45-7:00 pm}! "Jesus Loves Me" has become the lullaby we sing while we rock and he takes his bottle. As soon as his bottle is gone, I put him in his crib with his paci {multiple pacis}, and he puts himself to sleep.
  • We're very spoiled because he's been so good about sleeping through the night...until just last week when he learned to pull himself up on the side of his crib. The problem isn't that he's pulling himself up...the problem is that he gets "stuck" in that position and is afraid to let go in order to lay himself back down. I think he gets scared that he's going to fall and just starts screaming. Of course by that time, he's completely woken himself up, so we've been having to rock him for a few minutes to make him drowsy enough to fall back to sleep.
  • We're trying to get our non-napping babe to nap in the morning and afternoon so we can spend more time with him in the evenings {it's hard on a working momma and daddy when the little man wants to go to bed at 6:30}. He's pretty good about going down for a nap...but most of the time he only stays asleep for 10-20 minutes. And then sometimes {on a rare occasion} the lil' munchkin will sleep for two hours! It's totally hit-or-miss.
  • Last month we were so excited when he was sitting stable on his own...but this month he's so over that. He'd much rather STAND! He pulls up to everyone and everything...but his little legs are still pretty wobbly, so someone has to be close by to catch him when they give out. Imagine my surprise when I turned around and found him STANDING in his crib one evening...

  • Crawling...like it's his job! It took him a couple of weeks to transition from the Army crawl to legit hands-and-knees crawling, but he's mastered it...and the boy is ON.THE.MOVE! Ryan actually captured his first time to crawl on video...

I think his favorite thing to do is crawl underneath things...almost like it's a tunnel.
  • It's very clear that he recognizes the people that he's around the most. The excitement he shows when he sees me first thing in the morning or when I get home from work truly turns this momma's heart to mush!
  • He's also starting to acknowledge/respond when we call his name.
  • He still just has TWO teeth: the bottom two front teeth. Although I can't feel anything through his gums, he acts like the top teeth might be bothering him a bit. He's showing a lot more interest in his cold teething toys...and anything soft goes straight to his mouth {socks are his favorite!}.

A few more things that took place during Huston's eighth month...
  • Tracy and Hannah came to visit...

  • We started attending the "Baby Steps" program at the library on Monday evenings...

  • He found the wine {and Momma & Daddy got to work baby-proofing the house}...

  • We visited a couple of Easter bunnies...

  • And celebrated Huston's first Easter...

  • Grammy came to visit...

  • He experienced his first Canton Trade Days...

  • And somehow we survived Momma's first night away for work. Daddy and Huston were perfectly fine...Momma struggled with it a bit.

Dear Huston,

What an exciting month! You surprise us every day with something new you do...and it all seems to involve moving and exploring! You are definitely no longer content just sitting still. We never know what you're going to do next, so I'll just say you're doing an excellent job of keeping us on our toes! It's so fun to watch you grow and learn.  We're learning right along beside you, baby boy, and it's such an incredible ride!

I somehow managed to survive my first overnight work trip {the night before you turned 8 months old}. I knew you and Daddy would be just fine at home without me, but I wasn't so sure how I would be without the two of you. It was very hard to be away, and I missed my boys more than you could imagine...but thank goodness for FaceTime! :) That one night away from you and our little family made me realize just how much I love our everyday life. There is absolutely nothing better!

Your sweet, easy-going personality and your loud, high-pitched squeaks and squeals fill our home with so much joy. You are a chatter-box...constantly talking up a storm, but you haven't really expressed any "words" just yet. You've started giving us kisses...on occasion...and I love those sweet sugars so very much! You are the center of our world, lil' guy, and we love you more than you will ever know!

Love you forever and ever,
